DESCRIPTION:  \nSPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS: Staci Christine Powers\, A deaf artist \n  \nfree reception: September 14\, 2019 2:00 – 4:00 pm \n  \nThe Spotlight on the Arts at the Hallet Oak Gallery for September will be featuring mixed-media drawings and acrylic paintings of a contemporary artist\, Staci Christine Powers. \n  \nStaci Powers is a talented artist who never realized she was deaf until a teacher informed her so at the age of 14. Her parents realized her artistic ability at a young age when she drew pictures to communicate with them. Through her ability to read lips and use sign language\, she has become a successful artist and teacher. \n  \nAfter overcoming her hearing adversity\, she is now proud to acknowledge her deafness. Powers explains\, “Just as music can evoke emotions\, colors and images also can evoke emotions. For those people who live without sounds in their lives\, visual images fill the void left by the absence of sounds. So when you look at my paintings\, imagine the “sounds” that they attempt to create with their colorful images: purple dress\, orange hair\, trees\, etc.” Then notice the poems which accompany each painting; they enhance the emotions. \n  \nA graduate of Texas Tech with a Master of Art Education degree\, Staci Powers says three artists have influenced her artwork: Hollis Sigler\, Carmen Lomas Garza\, and Faith Ringgold. Through these artists\, who had each overcome difficult challenges\, she was able to discover how art profoundly expresses real life experiences. Her works and poems are works in progress. She says they enable her to “find the sound with my eyes.” \nThis inspiring exhibit will remain on display through September 28th. All Spotlight exhibits are free and open to the public. Main St.\, Hallettsville\, TX 77964 – 361-217-7030 www.halletoakgallery.com \nAbout Gene Grant\, Realism Oil Painter\, Hallettsville\, TX: Gene Grant’s work is inspired by Boris Vallejo\, a Peruvian painter whose work has graced the covers of science fiction paperbacks. Most recently\, he has been influenced by painter\, Michael Windberg. Gene Grant enjoys and challenges himself in capturing facial features\, especially the eyes. He is available for commissioned works. Gene’s art elevates awareness of the Black community’s past and present. His new work encourages young people to follow a path. “This can be done”\, Gene says\, “By being more visible. Black people need to be seen out in the open doing great things within their community. Many have all along through the ages\, perhaps not so visible.” He shares the beauty of being born black in his artworks. \nAbout Earl Jones\, Wood Sculptor/Painter\, Galveston\, TX: Earl Jones has a heart-felt connection with art and has an ability to sculpt\, draw\, and paint to fulfill the imagination of his clients. Earl has a Fine Arts degree from Texas Southern University. His thumbprint is to share with the world\, a visual masterpiece that brings out inner joy and peace. He hopes is to stimulate each onlooker to write his or her own story and elicit his or her own interpretation. Earl Jones carvings can be seen throughout Texas\, including a tribute to Cadets at Texas A & M University (Marine Science) in Galveston. An art virtuoso\, Earl studied and was influenced by legendary fine artists; among them was famed artist John Biggers and Carroll Simms. \nAbout Moses Adams\, Jr.\, Master Painter and Mixed-Media Artist\, Houston\, TX: Moses Adams Jr. was born in Hallettsville and attended Texas Southern University for his Art Education degree. He served in the U.S. Army and taught art. He is currently devoting his time to create a personal retrospect of rural life during segregation. “He enjoys painting scenes from Texas that disappeared long ago.” recalls\, Harley Fisk\, Operations Manager at Hallet Oak Gallery. Harley says “Moses’ has a distinct style. He experienced segregation and is now able to paint those memories. The youths ahead\, will only hear stories. Moses art is irreplaceable.” An art collector\, Doris Zumwalt explains\, “It’s not just a scene\, it’s the love Adams has for the people he’s painting and that appeals to me. “. \nAbout Ameera York\, Gospel Pop Recording Artist\, Hallettsville\, TX: \nAmeera York\, grew up in Hallettsville singing in churches. Her gospel music emits pop and urban overtones and she now ministers to the world conveying the love of Christ. Growing up with her mother always preaching Jesus and leading youth conferences gave Ameera a strong foundational background. Ameera has been singing the majority of her life\, but began ‘rapping’ on her step-father’s recordings with her three brothers. Her commitment is first to the Lord and her heart is to simply be a vessel for God’s use – to heal\, bring joy and help others see their purpose in the Lord’s plan. \n The Hallet Oak Gallery is hosting a reception and Juneteenth Celebration featuring four black artists titled: “Retrospect of Freedom” and will be held on Wednesday\, June 19\, 2019\, from 7:00 PM till 9 PM. The book features profiles of 23 women\, many of whom have achieved “firsts” in their fields and have made significant contributions to the offshore oil and gas industry. Interviewees include all five women who have been inducted into the Offshore Energy Center Hall of Fame in Houston\, Texas\, as well as Mieko Mahi\, freelance petroleum photographer/videographer\, who is also Executive Director of Hallet Oak Gallery\, and former Schulenburg resident\, ocean engineering major Alyssa Michalke\, the first female Commander of the Texas A & M Corps of Cadets. Main St.\, Hallettsville\, TX 77964 \nGallery open hours: Daily 11 AM – 3 PM Mon. – Sat. \n361-217-7030 www.halletoakgallery.com \nFree \n  \nPamela Urban\, born in Houston\, currently resides in Columbus\, TX. She attended Sam Houston University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and is a contemporary artist specializing in unique photographic images only she sees and creates. Pamela Urban explains\, ”I enjoy exploring forests to see what new can be discovered! Having loved drawing and painting at an early age\, art became a passion the moment a camera was placed in my hands.” The continued appreciation for nature developed from fishing with her grandmother to hiking at the Texas State Parks with her pet dog.  Urban has captured a-many stock photographs of plants in their native environment. This exhibit is a glimpse of Pamela Urban’s imagery that contemplates the human aspect to the surrounding environment.
