DESCRIPTION:Music Night at the HOG \nJD Wellfed & Guest: Mike Blakely \nMarch 14\, 2016 7:00 – 9:00 PM  \nTickets $10 or $8 Seniors \n  \nPortrait of Mike Blakely\, photo by Annie Blakely. \n  \nFolks in Lavaca County will have an opportunity on March 14\, 2016 to hear and meet the nationally acclaimed singer/songwriter\, Mike Blakely. Popular singer and songwriter JD Wellfed (John Reeves) of Sweet Home will host the seventh in a series of musical evenings Monday night at the Hallet Oak Gallery. His guest is Mike Blakey. \n  \nBlakely has published 18 books\, including one co-written with Willie Nelson and one co-written by Kenny Rogers. A Wharton County native\, he served in the U.S. Air Force and earned a journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin. His most recent book\, “A Song to Die For\,” came out in 2014. He is a two-time winner of the Western Writers of America’s Spur Award—once for best western novel of the year\, and once for best western song of the year. \nIn addition to his novels\, Blakely has released 11 CDs and has performed all over the U.S. and Europe. Singers who have recorded his songs include Alan Jackson\, Gary P. Nunn\, Red Steagall\, Flaco Jimenez and Raul Malo\, John Arthur Martinez\, Randy Brown\, Geronimo Trevino III and Johnny Rodriguez\, Johnny Bush\, Pauline Reese\, Debbi Walton and others. The Flaco Jimenez album with Mike’s tune won a Grammy Award in 1995. In 2007 the orbiting International Space Station played one of his tunes. More recently he co-wrote “Seguro Que Hell Yes” with John Arthur Martinez and Alex Harvey\, released on Alan Jackson’s set “Genuine—the Alan Jackson Story” in 2015. \nHost JD Wellfed will continue to charm the audience on March 14 with his original songs about the countryside and every day experiences. Whether performing country\, folk or bluegrass\, or whether performing solo or with his band on festival stages or small town taverns\, JD is well on his way to leaving an impression on the Americana/acoustic country/folk/singer songwriter scene. \n  \nMusic Night at the HOG is held the 2nd Monday of every month. In the relaxed atmosphere\, the performers interact with the audience\, entertaining questions and sharing insight into their music. \n  \nDoors open at 6:30 PM.  Bring your own drinks.  Ice and cups provided. DESCRIPTION:  \nSaturday is bustling with artists and tourists stopping in to see what the gallery is all about. Hot fresh brewed free coffee and pastries are on hand. Artisans and artists display and show their latest works as walk-ins or sublease a display table if they have lots to share. \nThe gallery supports 16 local artists\, five international artists and four Houstonian artists: Artworks presently on display are by Bob Barrera\, acrylic paintings; Steve Beckman\, watercolors; Larry Charles\, Al Eisenberg\, acrylic paintings; watercolors; Gene Grant\, pencil sketches; Larry Bozka\, wildlife photographer; Blanche Cavarretta\, gourd artist; Roy Cavarretta\, pen and ink reproductions as well as carved gourd art; Gisela Floto\, contemporary photography; Cherri Fryer\, pottery; Alberto Godoy\, oil paintings; Art Juarez\, historical photography; Ofi Juarez\, historical photography; Valentia Kisseleva\, pen and ink; Yan Lee\, pen and ink reproductions; Mieko Mahi\, industrial art; Marcus Mann\, oil painting and reproductions; Hege Nolop\, jewelry; Chu Okoli\, oil paintings; Elizabeth Payne\, acrylic paintings; James Phillips\, wood sculptor; Danny Stephens\, bronze sculptor; Alice Vickers\, acrylic paintings; and Michael Windberg\, oil paintings. SUMMARY:SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS: MICHAEL WINDBERG\, TRADITIONAL OIL PAINTER
DESCRIPTION:spotlight on the arts  \nMichael Windberg\, painter of landscapes and historic subjec  \nOPEN TO THE PUBLIC: NO ADMISSION FEE \nArea residents will have a rare opportunity in March to view the work of Michael Windberg. Following in the tradition of his father\, renowned Texas oil painter Dahlhart Windberg\, Michael has made his own mark as a serious painter of Texas landscapes and historical subjects such as the Texas Alamo. Michael confesses\, “While I enjoy historical images\, landscapes will always be my first love.” The Windberg ranch near Goliad has been in the family since 1848. Michael enjoys painting there in the ranch’s quiet atmosphere. “I have painted in Colorado and Wyoming\, but you just can’t beat Texas landscapes for those soft\, tranquil scenes we all love.” In addition to his original compositions\, Michael has worked for more than 15 years restoring old oil paintings. “Each one\,” Michael points out\, “teaches me something I can apply to my own work.” \nThe opening for Windberg’s exhibit was Saturday\, March 5\, 2016.   The gallery invites everyone to come by see Michael’s many works\, enjoy the refreshments\, and view the wonderful paintings. The exhibit will continue until the end of March with receptions on each Saturday afternoon. \n  \nSaturday\, March 19\, Art\, Conversation\, Refreshments\, 2 – 6 PM \nSaturday\, March 26\, Art\, Conversation\, Refreshments\, 2 – 6 pm \n  \nThe Hallet Oak Gallery is located on the Square in Hallettsville in the historic Kahn and Stanzel Building designed by famed architect James Riely Gordon. Operating as part of the non-profit Hallet Oak Foundation\, the Gallery seeks to enhance art appreciation in the community as a whole—from grade school students to senior citizens—and to introduce visitors to Hallettsville to the talents and flavors of this region.
