Riely Gordon Historical Art Contest in Hallettsville on June 11. Entries in the contest had to address some aspect of Gordon’s life or work. The sculpture\, a miniature replica of the Gordon’s Kahn & Stanzel Building where the Gallery is housed\, stood out in a field of photographic entries showing various courthouses designed by Gordon. The sculpture was complete with a second story floor inside\, plastic windows\, and tiny light fixtures on the building’s exterior. \n  \nCo-sponsored by the Hallet Oak Gallery and the Texas Society of Architects\, the art contest accompanied a two day conference honoring Gordon. Gordon worked during the golden age of Texas architecture\, 1880-1930\, designing 18 Texas courthouses\, along with numerous other buildings. Twelve of Gordon’s courthouses are still in use today. \n  \nA retired Houston school teacher\, Adams grew up in Hallettsville. Riely Gordon \n  \n(HALLETTSVILLE\, TX) – The Hallet Oak Gallery\, a nonprofit organization supporting education for cultural arts\, in partnership with the Texas Society of Architects\, is sponsoring a statewide art contest celebrating the work of renowned architect J. Riely Gordon (1863-1937). The gallery is also hosting a conference honoring Gordon June 10-11\, 2016. In addition to the beautiful Kahn & Stanzel Building (1890) that houses the gallery\, Gordon designed 18 Texas courthouses\, 12 of which are in use today. He also designed the 1901 Arizona State Capitol Building\, now a state museum. \n  \nPresentations for the conference about J. Riely Gordon and historical Texas architecture will begin at 7:00 PM Friday\, June 10\, at 7 PM. Lavaca County historian Doug Kubicek will talk about mercantile activity during the time the Kahn & Stanzel Building was built. Following Kubicek will be photographer and architect Richard Payne\, FAIA. Payne will talk about his book\, Texas Towns and the Art of Architecture\, A Photographer’s Journey and his Texas towns photography exhibit\, which will be on view at the gallery. \n  \nThe gallery will serve coffee and doughnuts on Saturday morning at 9 AM and host book signings featuring Brantley Hightower (The Courthouses of Central Texas)\, Chris Meister (James Riely Gordon: His Courthouses and Other Public Architecture)\, and Doug Kubicek (Grand\, Complete\, and Perfect: The Lavaca County Courthouse). Lavaca County Judge Tramer Woytek has approved special tours on Friday evening and Saturday morning for those who would like to see the recently renovated Lavaca County Courthouse. \n  \nHightower will kick off the Saturday afternoon program\, speaking during lunch. followed by Meister\, and James P. They will be judged according to age group: adults (age 20 and up)\, teens (age 12-19)\, and children (age 6-11). Entry fee is $20 per artwork submitted ($10 for children). Winners will receive certificates and cash prizes and subscriptions to the Texas Architects magazine. Meister has been a consultant on restorations and National Historic Landmark listings for county courthouses in Texas.\n\n\n\n\n\nRichard Payne\, FAIA is a former practicing architect and one of the most respected\, experienced\, and widely published photographers of architecture in the United States. Known nationally for his work for leading architects\, designers\, contractors and corporations\, he has completed assignments throughout the US\, as well as projects in Australia\, Canada\, Venezuela\, Mexico\, France\, Germany\, Spain\, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Payne has published 9 books in addition to his Texas Towns and the Art of Architecture\, A Photographer’s Journey and has received numerous awards. His work has been exhibited throughout Texas and in New York\, and he has given lectures and seminars for the University of Houston\, Texas A&M\, and the Professional Photographers of America.\nJames P. Arnold\, Preservation Specialist for restoration of the Kahn & Stanzel Building\, has a BBA in Urban & Regional Studies from Baylor University and a Masters in Architecture from the University of Houston with a certificate in Historic Preservation and Adaptive Reuse. At the University of Houston he was awarded the Myron Anderson Prize\, inducted in the Tau Sigma Delta National Honor Society\, and elected into the 50 from 50 Hall of Fame for the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture. He co-authored On the Slopes of the Volcano-Documentation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Mexican Monasteries of the Sixteenth Century and Workshop for Historic Architecture (the first eighteen years).\n\n\n\n\n\nBrantley Hightower holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin as well as a Post-Professional Masters of Architecture degree from Princeton University. He has worked for Perkins & Will in Chicago\, Max Levy Architect in Dallas and Lake|Flato Architects in San Antonio. He has won numerous awards and has been exhibited in Arizona\, New York\, New Jersey\, Texas and Washington\, D.C. He has taught at the University of Texas at Arlington\, Texas Tech University\, Trinity University and the University of Texas at Austin. He has lectured on courthouses throughout the state and is a regular contributor to The Rivard Report and Texas Architect Magazine and has published in Platform\, Constructs\, Pidgin and Clog architectural journals. He is Vice President of Texas Society of Architects.\nPaul Bielamowicz\, AIA\, LEED AP\, President of Texas Society of Architects\, creates environmentally responsible designs for large\, complex projects. He received the 2009 Texas Society of Architects (TSA) Young Professional Achievement Award for his contributions to the architectural profession\, exemplary leadership\, and service as an AIA role model. In 2014\, he was nominated for the position of TSA President\, beginning with service in 2015 as President-Elect\, President in 2016\, and Immediate Past President in 2017. A design competition he organized in 2007 resulted in a $500\,000 grant to the City of Austin from Texas Parks and Wildlife to turn an underdeveloped site into Gus Garcia Park. Paul and the other founders of the competition team received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Austin City Council.\n\n\n\nAbout J. Riely Gordon\, Kahn & Stanzel Building Architect: \nThe Kahn & Stanzel building in Hallettsville\, Texas\, built in 1890\, has recently been restored in the first part of this century and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This edifice was designed by architect J. Riely Gordon\, and is currently used as an art\, performance and learning center. \nJames Riely Gordon (1863-1937)\, referred to as Riely\, was born in Virginia\, and moved with his family to San Antonio when he was around ten years old. He graduated from the public school at age 14 and worked as a civil engineer and a draftsman. His education as an architect was self-taught\, making his extraordinary career all the more impressive. In 1902 Gordon moved to New York City\, where he continued his successful career and served as President of the New York Society of Architects for thirteen years. \nTexas was blessed with a number of fine architects in the late-19th century\, but few were self-educated and most received their training outside the state. For example\, Nicholas Clayton (1840-1916) emigrated from Ireland with his widowed mother\, eventually apprenticed with a Memphis architectural firm that sent him to Galveston to supervise work there. He decided to stay. Alfred Giles (1853-1920) was educated in England at King’s College\, London University and worked for a London architectural firm before immigrating to the United States and settling in San Antonio. Michael enjoys painting there in the ranch’s quiet atmosphere. “I have painted in Colorado and Wyoming\, but you just can’t beat Texas landscapes for those soft\, tranquil scenes we all love.” In addition to his original compositions\, Michael has worked for more than 15 years restoring old oil paintings. “Each one\,” Michael points out\, “teaches me something I can apply to my own work.” \nThe exhibit will continue until the end of March with receptions on each Saturday afternoon. \n  \nSaturday\, March 26\, Art\, Conversation\, Refreshments\, 2 – 6 pm \n  \nThe Hallet Oak Gallery is located on the Square in Hallettsville in the historic Kahn and Stanzel Building designed by famed architect James Riely Gordon. Following in the tradition of his father\, renowned Texas oil painter Dahlhart Windberg\, Michael has made his own mark as a serious painter of Texas landscapes and historical subjects such as the Texas Alamo. Michael confesses\, “While I enjoy historical images\, landscapes will always be my first love.” The Windberg ranch near Goliad has been in the family since 1848.
