SUMMARY:Spotlight on the Arts featuring Alice Vickers\, Mixed Media Artist
DESCRIPTION:  \nSpotlight on the Arts: Alice Vickers\, Mixed Media Artist \nOpening Reception Saturday\, August 12\, 2017 2 PM to 4 PM \nFree and Open to the Public – Drinks and Refreshments \nExhibit will be up through August 12 – August 31\, 2017 \n  \n  \nHallet Oak Gallery is spotlighting Alice Vickers for her imaginative works of art. Alice’s mixed media paintings are either in watercolor\, acrylics\, colored pencils or pastels and are described as imaginative and very colorful. \nCollectors of Alice Vickers’s work have said that her paintings give them “a feeling of happiness.” Inspired by modernist artist John Marin and abstract expressionist artist Willem de Kooning\, Alice has always been enchanted by intense color and at times completely ignores local color to express an emotion or mood.  Most of Alice’s paintings are abstract as she explains\, “I have no desire to be a slave to reality. I use design and shape in ways that I can never predict precisely how a painting will turn out. I can only plan as carefully as possible and then let my unconscious impulses take over.” \nAlice grew up in Galveston and was always interested in sketching and painting from a very early age. She attended Sam Houston State Teachers College and studied Art and Business. Throughout her thirty-three year career with Exxon Company\, USA\, she exhibited in many juried shows and won many awards. \n  \nAlice and her husband Bob moved from Houston in 2001 to live in Vsetin. Alice is on the Hallet Oak Gallery Board and is a Founder of Hallet Oak Foundation. She volunteers at the United Methodist Church and is an Auxiliary Member at the Lavaca Medical Center. \n  \nAlice Vickers will be at the Gallery to share insights about her art from 2 to 4 PM on August 12 for for an opening reception. Her contemporary artworks will be for sale and on display through August 31\, 2017. \nThe Hallet Oak Gallery is located at 115 N. Main St. on the Downtown Courthouse Square in Hallettsville in the historic Kahn and Stanzel Building. For more information visit www.halletoakgallery.com or call 361-217-7030. \n  \n \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

As a child he explored fields\, bridges\, and graveyards\, bringing home arrowheads\, broken glass and other artifacts. Kubicek has taught history for 27 years\, primarily in Hallettsville. He received the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award in 2011. Kubicek\, current president of the Lavaca Historical Commission\, has said\, “As a historian\, it is my belief that the past is endlessly fascinating and worth knowing. Everything and everyone has a history. It is one aspect of life that binds all humanity together\, especially as Texans.” \n \nSharon Fleming\, AIA \n  \nSharon Fleming\, AIA is the director of the Division of Architecture at the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and serves as the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer. With the Commission since 1995\, Ms. Fleming first served as the architectural reviewer for South Texas. In 2000\, she became courthouse reviewer for central Texas and assumed Assistant Directorship for the nationally acclaimed Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP) for which she was instrumental in developing the administrative procedures for the program. The THCPP has been recognized by the Texas Society of Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation with honor awards. \nSince 2012\, Ms. Fleming has served as Director of this program and has overseen grants in excess of $44 million to plan\, restore and repair historic Texas courthouses. Ms. Fleming also directs Texas Courthouse Stewardship Program created in 2005 to support completed courthouse restoration projects. This program provides technical assistance and training to county staff on how to maintain their newly restored courthouses. The goal is to prevent the facilities from returning to a state of deferred maintenance and disrepair. In addition to annual Texas Courthouse Stewardship workshops held in Austin since 2007\, the program now offers training and networking opportunities on a regional basis. Other programs administered by her staff currently include the federal and state rehabilitation tax credits\, the National Historic Preservation Act and the Antiquities Code of Texas. \nMs. Fleming is a preservation architect and member of the American Institute of Architects. She earned a professional degree in Architecture from Auburn University in Alabama in 1988 and a master’s degree in Architecture with an emphasis in Historic Preservation from Texas Tech University in 1997. With Al York\, FAIA they currently parent 3 teenage boys in Austin. \n  \n \nAl York\, FAIA \n  \nMr. York is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) from Auburn University and\, after a brief internship in Baltimore\, continued his education at Cornell University (MArch) where he studied with many of the legendary Texas Rangers. He arrived in Texas in 1992 to teach architecture design and theory on the faculty of Texas Tech University. In 1995 he moved to Austin and joined Heather McKinney’s office\, becoming a partner in 1998. \n  \nMr. York’s work consistently explores the poetic potential in the dialogue between the ‘new’ and the ‘old’.  His designs for the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock\, the Chilling Station #6 in the heart the UT campus\, the McGarrah Jessee Building at 6th and Colorado in downtown Austin\, and the African American Cultural and Heritage Facility in east Austin all perpetuate a sincere\, respectful yet lively conversation between the past and present. \n  \nMcKinney York Architects is a twenty-five-person\, design-driven practice committed to creating beautiful\, responsible architecture in a culture of curiosity and collaboration.  Now celebrating their 34th anniversary they were recently named Texas Society of Architect’s Firm of the Year. Over the past few years their work has received awards from AIA’s Architect Magazine\, the Brick Industry Association\, Texas Society of Architects\, Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture\, Austin AIA\, Preservation Austin\, and Preservation Texas. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Spotlight on the Arts featuring Aaron Riske\, Mixed-Media Artist\, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Spotlight on the Arts featuring Aaron Riske\, Mixed-Media Artist\, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 13 @ 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Free Open to the Public Hallet Oak Gallery\, 115 N. Main St. Hallettsville\, TX \nAaron Riske\, a bold mixed media and collage artist\, was born with Spina Bifida. Yet\, Aaron’s story is one of accepting what God has given and excelling. Like the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo\, who incorporated her lifelong suffering from a trolley accident into her work\, Aaron’s art reflects his life. His artworks are filled with a beautiful\, powerful vision. Finding joy in life by helping others is his mission. A devoted assistant treasurer and docent at the Hallet Oak Gallery\, Aaron is also a volunteer at the Gaslight Theatre in Shiner and at the Leo Welder Theatre in Victoria. For his exceptional volunteer work\, he was nominated to be among the top three Citizens of the Year by the City of Hallettsville in 2017. In April 2017\, Governor Abbot anointed Aaron as an honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy with all rights and privileges appertaining thereto and with the duty of assisting in the preservation of the history\, boundaries\, water resources\, and defense of the State.\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn speaker: Marika Bordes\, Sculptor
DESCRIPTION:Hallet Oak Gallery Lunch & Learn 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m with coffee reception following\n \nMarika the Path of Sculptor Book by Marika Bordes is an invitation to persevere in your quest for your full potential of a more creative life. \nTo order this book go to the Amazon link in the left column under the heading Marika Links.\nMARIKA BORDES\nThe Haitian child had a dream: To dance with the trees high in the clouds in their care-free world.\nMarika Bordes comes to us via Haiti\, then Canada\, then NYC\, then Sequin\,Texas. Her subtlety with the chisel makes the labor look as if one was cutting through butter. The resulting images are rich with the power of the wood\, the power of the spirit\, and the power of the love she places into her craft. Bordes’ considers her sculptures to be ambassadors— great seers witnessing and protecting the sacredness of life. They invite the inner sensations of joy and serenity. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:First Day of Spring Downtown Hallettsville Chalk Art Celebration
DESCRIPTION:First Day of Spring Downtown Hallettsville Chalk Art Celebration\, \nArt Sale and Membership Drive \nOutdoor Guest Performance by Chris Rybak \nDowntown – Free \nOn the first day of Spring\, Monday\, March 20\, 2017\, the Hallet Oak Gallery is hosting a 2017 Spring Chalk Art Celebration and Membership Drive inviting schools and families to chalk the parking space in front of Hallet Oak Gallery from 2 pm to 6 pm. Chris Rybak will provide an outdoor guest performance with polka/country live music. Refreshments will be served inside the Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. \n“We are excited about this event and need the schools to contact the Gallery\, so we know how much chalk and refreshments to provide. Chris Rybak fans can sign-up for a “flash dance” performance on the street\, which will include the “Country Line Dance\, Chicken Dance” and the “The Wave”\, says Aaron Riske\, Hallet Oak Foundation Assistant Treasurer. \nThe faded yellow driveway space in front of the Gallery\, located in the famed Kahn & Stanzel building\, will be transformed into a pastel colored pathway. Elementary\, middle\, and High School students\, as well as families and professional artists are invited to join together to create a temporary masterpiece. \n“Starting the month of March\, all art in the Gallery will be 10 percent off\, with an additional 15 percent off for members\, making the sale 25 percent off all artworks through the end of the month. Since we are non-profit\, our motivation is different; for example\, we are here to support the artist and serve the community. But of course we still have expenses to maintain the building and hold events so we have to charge nominal fees sometimes\, and we want to do more marketing to support the artists so they can keep doing their work. For this Spring Celebration we’d like to keep it as a free admission to enjoy the live music and see the artworks. Membership to the Gallery helps with some of the operation costs\, and it shows support to our volunteers\, as does buying the artworks shows support to the artist”\, explains Mieko Mahi\, Executive Director of Hallet Oak Gallery. \nSchools and large groups please RSVP: 361-217-7030. Hallet Oak Foundation is a 501 c 3\, the parent company of Hallet Oak Gallery and Friends of Hallettsville Downtown Revitalization. Hallet Oak Gallery is a fine art\, performance\, and learning center. To learn more\, visit halletoakgallery.com \nMore about Shelly King:\nShelley King is a musical ambassador of the Austin\, Texas sound. For the past twenty years King has built a solid national career as a singer and songwriter who is both a successful solo artist and leader of a formidable band of Austin’s finest musicians. Her blend of original blues\, rock\, folk\, country\, soul and gospel led her to be the first woman appointed by the Texas Legislature to represent the state as it’s Official Texas State Artist – Musician; an honor similar to poet laureate. On stage she leads her band through tangents of electric Southern blues and acoustic folk\, revved-up Cajun country and rock and roll with a charismatic ease that evidences the resilience of a lifelong performer. She has won Austin Music Awards for Song of the Year and Best Roots Rock Band and released seven albums of original music to rave reviews and radio chart success. Shelley tours relentlessly\, performing over 180 dates a year at venues from coffee shops and house concerts to big theaters and major festivals across the world. Her songs have been recorded by numerous national and international artists and appeared in feature films. \n“Building a Fire”\, her most recent CD and the second recorded with members of New Orleans favorite sons\, the subdudes\, has affirmed King’s place as master of her own style of Americana blues. The Austin Chronicle says “Building a Fire assembles an audio dictionary of roots music. King’s powerful\, twanged alto takes care of the rest. The kickoff cut blends Louisiana zydeco with blues sensibility\, the singer’s no-holds-barred vocal mastery front and center… “Building a Fire” is filled with sinewy soul and King’s trademark brand of torrid gospel and blues\, it’s her most confident work yet. One where the songs\, band\, and singer sound comfortable together\, each filled with the kind of grace that’s scarce and delivers salvation.” \n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print
