Folks in Lavaca County will have an opportunity on March 14, 2016 to hear and meet the nationally acclaimed singer/songwriter, Mike Blakely. Popular singer and songwriter JD Wellfed (John Reeves) of Sweet Home will host the seventh in a series of musical evenings Monday night at the Hallet Oak Gallery. His guest is Mike Blakey.

Blakely has published 18 books, including one co-written with Willie Nelson and one co-written by Kenny Rogers. A Wharton County native, he served in the U.S. Air Force and earned a journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin. His most recent book, “A Song to Die For,” came out in 2014. He is a two-time winner of the Western Writers of America’s Spur Award—once for best western novel of the year, and once for best western song of the year.

In addition to his novels, Blakely has released 11 CDs and has performed all over the U.S. and Europe. Singers who have recorded his songs include Alan Jackson, Gary P. Nunn, Red Steagall, Flaco Jimenez and Raul Malo, John Arthur Martinez, Randy Brown, Geronimo Trevino III and Johnny Rodriguez, Johnny Bush, Pauline Reese, Debbi Walton and others. The Flaco Jimenez album with Mike’s tune won a Grammy Award in 1995. In 2007 the orbiting International Space Station played one of his tunes. More recently he co-wrote “Seguro Que Hell Yes” with John Arthur Martinez and Alex Harvey, released on Alan Jackson’s set “Genuine—the Alan Jackson Story” in 2015.

Host JD Wellfed will continue to charm the audience on March 14 with his original songs about the countryside and every day experiences. Whether performing country, folk or bluegrass, or whether performing solo or with his band on festival stages or small town taverns, JD is well on his way to leaving an impression on the Americana/acoustic country/folk/singer songwriter scene.

Music Night at the HOG is held the 2nd Monday of every month. In the relaxed atmosphere, the performers interact with the audience, entertaining questions and sharing insight into their music.

Doors open at 6:30 PM.  Bring your own drinks.  Ice and cups provided. Checks or cash accepted for $10 door fee.
