James Phillips Life
Saturday, October 8, 2016, 12:00-1:00 PM
Long-time Galveston Bay area resident and sculptor James “Jim” Phillips is a self-taught chainsaw-wielding artist who gives credit to his mother’s inspiration and his innate talent for carving. When his practice sculptures were stolen, he figured it was time to pursue carving full time. In 2008, Hurricane Ike wiped out many of the trees in Galveston; he reclaimed them as art and became famous across Texas for his tree sculptures. The Halllettsville community commissioned Jim to carve two bison from the 250 year old Hallet Oak Tree. Hallet Oak Gallery’s monthly Lunch & Learn series will present James Phillips life on Saturday, October 8, from 12-1:00 PM.
Doors open at 11:30 AM. The $20 ticket includes lunch. Preregistration by October 6th is $15 and also includes lunch. Walk-ins after 11:30 are $20 but will not receive lunch.
James Phillips will also be the featured artist for the October Spotlight on the Arts at the Gallery. Please join us for a free reception from 1 – 3 PM, October 8th. James Phillips sculptures will be available for purchase. For more information, see Calendar-of-Events at www.halletoakgallery.com or to RSVP call 361-217-7030.
